The 996 did come out with a ZF sourced automatic transmission for all the non turbo/ non GT cars. The turbo trans was sourced from Mercedes due to the ZF one not being able to handle the torque. From 2002 with the increase in torque of the base models, the ZF was replaced with the Mercedes unit.
